My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia shouldn't work as well as it does. A shonen series about a boy who wants to be a hero in a world full of them sounds like it would collapse under the weight of its own familiarity. What Horikoshi did instead was use every familiar piece of the genre as a foundation to tell an unexpected story about the pursuit of heroism, what it looks like, what it means, and what it costs every day.

Deku isn't compelling because he has superpowers. He's compelling because, even as a powerless child, he was already the most heroic person in the show.

The MHA fandom has stayed strong even after the anime ended because MHA asks us real questions that have complicated answers. What does heroism actually cost? What do you owe the society that made you, and what do you owe yourself?

These aren't questions most shonen series tackle seriously. But MHA asks them constantly, through Deku, through Bakugo, through Todoroki, and through every character who has to decide what kind of person they're going to be when the pressure ramps up.
