Attack on Titan

When Attack on Titan arrived on the scene, it changed the anime landscape forever. Even years after the anime finished in 2023, it remains one of the most talked about and highly regarded anime of all time.

It started with a simple premise (humanity is trapped inside walls, and giants are eating people for no clear reason), which looked like a setup for a straightforward action series. What Isayama built instead was a slow-motion deconstruction of every expectation we have around narratives about heroes, humanity, moral ambiguity, and the cost of freedom.

The reason the fandom has never really cooled down is that AOT gave people characters worth caring about. Not necessarily because they were likable but rather because they were real in a way that is so rare in modern storytelling. We see facets of ourselves in them, sometimes to an uncomfortable degree. Eren Yeager is a protagonist, but he’s not a hero. He's a person with a hunger so specific and so human that watching what it does to him is almost unbearable.
